E-WASTE MANAGEMENT

Environmental pollution has become a major concern all over the world. The future of world relies not only on the quantity of resources but on the quality of resources available. Air, Water and Soil pollution is a major threat to the human society all over the world. Waste management has become a need of the hour in all respects. Solid waste contains various form of bio degradable and non bio degradable waste in it. E-Waste is one form of solid waste that if not properly managed can cause severe environmental pollution.

E-Waste contains several substances and chemicals that are toxic in nature and can cause harm to the nature and human beings if not properly handled. India is also facing problems in this regard and the Central Pollution Control Board has drawn up separate guide lines in managing E-Waste even though it is a part of hazardous waste management. The current E-Waste generated is being processed in a crude manner to extract precious metals and recycle what ever is possible. The left over is being dumped in to the open yard or municipal land fill.

E-WASTE

Electronic and electrical waste in common is called as “E-WASTE”. Any obsolete electronic or electrical device such as computers, laptops, fax machines, copiers, printers, mobile phones, telephones, household equipments like washing machine, fridge, accessories like printer cartridges, toner cartridges, electrical items like switches, capacitors, cables etc. form E-Waste in general. In simple it is any electrical or electronic item that has been discarded by the user.

SOURCES OF E-WASTE

The various sources of E-Waste are:

  • House hold appliances

  • Office equipments

  • Entertainment devices

  • Lighting equipments

  • Electronic and Electrical tools

  • Sports equipments

  • Medical devices

  • Surveillance equipments

  • Automatic vending machines

  • Information Kiosks

HAZARDS OF E-WASTE

E-Waste if not properly treated is a major source of toxins. Studies conducted on Waste Management reveal that 70% of E-Waste disposed is toxic in nature and creates major hazards to environment. Improper and unscientific methods of treatment can pose a major problem to environment as seen in the case of uncontrolled burning of plastics, dismantling with out any protection and disposal in land without any treatment. The lead, mercury, cadmium and other heavy metals present in these waste cause harm to the nature.

Another dangerous process is the recycling of components containing compounds such as halogenated chlorides and bromides used as flame retardants in plastics, which form persistent dioxins and furans on combustion at low temperatures. Copper which is present in printed circuit boards and cables acts as a catalyst for dioxin formation when flame retardants are incinerated. A study on burning printed circuit boards in India showed alarming concentration of dioxin in the surroundings of open burning places reaching 30 times the Swiss guidance level.

A study conducted by National WEEE Task force estimates that 1,46,000 tons of E-Waste is being generated in India per year. An estimate of 30,000 computers is found to become obsolete every year from the IT industry of Bangalore alone. According to the study the top three categories of electronic and electrical waste generation are:

1. Household appliances - 42%

2. Information and Communication Technology equipment - 33.9%

3. Consumer electronics - 13.7%

SOLUTION

The hazardous E-Waste can be utilized as a resource if it is properly managed. When the techniques of segregation, dismantling, processing, recycling and disposal of the remaining waste, is done in a scientific manner, the hazards can be minimized to a great extent.

Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd provides such a solution for the management of E-Waste in India. Its state of the art facilities provide state of the art equipments and techniques in a scientific manner. It also helps to protect the environment from the hazards posed by E-Waste.

STATISTICS OF E-WASTE IN KERALA

A study conducted on E-Waste generated in the Kerala State says that approximately 1600 tons to 1700 tons is being generated. Most of the waste is being sent to the informal sector for recycling in adjacent states or disposed on landfill along with other solid waste.

PROPOSAL FOR HANDLING E-WASTE

Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd has set up a E-Waste facility in Kanjikode, Palakkad, Kerala. This facility will be later updated as a full fledged E-Waste processing plant when the necessary E-Waste starts to flow into the facility. Our mode of operation at Kerala till a full fledged facility is set up is as follows:

  • Set up collection points in various metros of Kerala

  • Collect E-Waste from public and private sector

  • Transport it to our facility at Palakkad and reduce the size.

  • Transport the E-Waste to our facility in Hyderabad for further processing.

COLLECTION FROM CORPORATE AND GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS

Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd will enter into an agreement with the corporate and government organizations to collect, transport and dispose the E-Waste on their behalf. An incentive will be paid for E-Waste which will provide income to Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd., while the generator have to pay the operators in the case of non income generators like fluorescent bulbs, tube lights etc., as it involves transportation and disposal cost to the operators.

HOUSE HOLDS AND END USERS

Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd plans to enter into an agreement with the Kudumbashree, which is the nodal agency for collecting solid waste for the Corporations and Muncipalities to collect the E-Waste from house holds and end users on a weekly basis. This will be transported by the operator to their collection points. A collection fee would be paid to the nodal agency (Kudumbashree) for this.

A collection network would be formed to collect and transport the E-Waste from the state in a systematic manner. As soon as the quantity of E-Waste generated is found to be sufficient and economically viable for operating a treatment facility, Earth Sense Recycle Pvt. Ltd would set up its own facility in the state.
